UPDATE: It was recently pointed out to me on Pinterest (rather rudely) that linoleum is different than vinyl.  I googled it and in fact, that is true.  Merely, Google also informed me that even floor stores use the terms interchangeably.  In any event, technically, my floors are VINYL. My painted VINYL floors are gorgeous and have been held up beautifully for over 4 years now! No chipping or peeling. I'g amazed!

Now, permit's review what the flooring looked similar BEFORE I painted it.  Ummm…yuck.

It was such a tragic brick pattern and was vinyl.  Not my loving cup of tea.  But, I did not desire to spend much money on the floor.  I had seen the laundry room makeover by Kelly at A View Along the Way and cruel in love with it.  She had painted her vinyl floors and they turned out beautifully, so I gave it a shot.

How to Pigment Vinyl Floors:

Materials needed:

  • Valspar Porch and Floor Latex Satin Enamel Paint
    • I used dark gray and creamy white colors.  You tin can have the pigment custom mixed to any colour at Lowe'southward.
  • KILZ Full general Purpose Interior Primer
  • Pigment rollers
  • Paint trays
  • Painter'due south tape
    • The width of painter's tape that you select volition depend on how wide you would like your stripes to exist.
  • Flooring cleaning solution
    • I recommend TSP, only if you lot don't have whatever on paw a more mild cleaner should piece of work.

Steps to Painting Vinyl Floors:

one) Select the pattern and colors to employ- I opted for a striped pattern for painting vinyl floors, much similar Kelly used.  Instead of going with deep black and stark white, I wanted a softer look, so I used an antique white and charcoal grey.  I purchased 1 quart of each colour in Valspar at Lowe'southward.  Be SURE to purchase porch and flooring paint.  Information technology is durable and is intended for human foot traffic.

2) Clear and clean the floor expanse- I was lucky that our laundry room was big enough to scoot the washer and dryer in and out of position to paint the flooring underneath it.  But, if yous are not so lucky, you will take to movement those bad boys somewhere else for a few days.  After you clear the floor, you demand to clean the floor.  Make sure it is clear of dust and dirt.  Some people recommend using TSP (a heavy duty cleaner), just I did not accept whatsoever on hand, so I used my normal floor cleaner (I utilize Mrs. Meyer's All Purpose Cleaner).

3) Prime the floor- I used regular old KILZ General Purpose Interior Primer  to prime the entire floor.  I poured the primer directly on the floor and used a small-scale paint roller to spread it.  I only used i glaze of primer and that worked just fine.  I did it around 9pm one nighttime and let it dry overnight.

4) Painting the vinyl floor– This step has several "sub-steps":

  • After letting the primer dry overnight, I painted the unabridged floor with the antique white color, which I considered my "base of operations" color, twice.  That'due south right, two coats.  Fortunately, this paint dries pretty apace, but I did utilize a large box fan to speed the process forth.  I was able to become these ii coats done in one day.  And then, I permit the base color dry overnight.  I am not going to lie, this was kind of a messy project.  Be prepared to scrub your feet :)

  • The post-obit nighttime, I taped off my stripes using regular blue painter's tape.  I used the existing brick design to make up one's mind the width of my stripes, which eliminated the need to measure out first.  Annotation that my floor had some definite texture to it, then I knew bleeding would happen, merely I just rolled with information technology.  I knew it would be an easy fix later on.  However, if yous admittedly want to avoid haemorrhage, follow this stride: Afterwards taping your floors, add one more coat of your base of operations color over the entire floor–paint OVER the record. That volition seal the well-baked lines and prevent any haemorrhage.  Trust me, it works on textured surfaces.

  • Next, I painted the stripes with my secondary colour–dark grey.  I also painted two coats with the charcoal grey color.  I let the outset coat dry overnight (more often than not because it was belatedly) and completed the 2nd coat the next dark.

  • Once your stripes are dry, remove the tape.  If yous have some bleeding, do not panic.  Merely take hold of an angled paint castor and utilize it to "cutting in" along the stripes to make them nice and crisp.  It sounds tedious, only this stride took me less than fifteen minutes.

That's it!  Now you know how to paint vinyl floors. It sounds similar a lot of steps (and it is), but each step takes no more than x to 20 minutes.  I establish painting my floor moved FAR more quickly than painting walls.  I recollect all of the steps combined took me less than 2 hours (excluding drying time).  In other words, it was easy to knock out in the evenings after work without being too exhausted the adjacent mean solar day.

The cease result is G.O.R.Yard.E.O.U.S! Painting our vinyl floors is the MOST WORTHWHILE 2 HOURS OF MY DIY LIFE! I admittedly beloved, love, love this flooring. UPDATE: It has been painted for over 4 years at present and it is holding up perfectly.  Nosotros have not "babied" it at all.  Nosotros are as crude on it as we have ever been–laundry baskets get scooted across it, etc. and there is no harm or scratching whatsoever from daily use. We did have to remove and supercede the water heater at one betoken and the floor did become scraped in i area when the plumber dragged the one-time water heater out, but that was understandable and like shooting fish in a barrel to touch upwardly.
